The program prepares specialists for work in school districts, government agencies, commercial test development companies, and research and evaluation enterprises. The Ed.S. degree is designed to provide professional educators with an opportunity to develop competencies in areas of special needs and interests. Consequently, the major has few required courses, and each student’s program of study is individually planned in consultation with a graduate faculty committee.

The program is designed to prepare individuals working in the testing and evaluation field for employment in school districts, government agencies, commercial test development companies, and program research and evaluation enterprises. The program prepares students with specialized skills in test development and analysis, data analysis, program evaluation, and qualitative and quantitative research design. Although this program is not an online program, many of the courses are offered in an online format.

This program focuses on the development of systematic inquiry skills essential to the study and evaluation of educational processes and outcomes. The intent of the program is to develop professionals to work in universities and colleges, school districts, government agencies, commercial test publishing companies, and program evaluation and research organizations. The program emphasizes coursework and research that focuses on inquiry methodology and applied problems in education and the social sciences. Students participate actively in research, with explicit goals for presentation of their research in refereed conferences and journals.

The certificate is intended for currently admitted University of Tennessee doctoral students (or individuals who have already earned a doctoral degree) wishing to develop knowledge and skills in evaluation, statistics, and measurement.

Students who complete this program have an opportunity to gain competencies in the design and implementation of program evaluations in fields such as education, health care, human services, criminal justice, and economic development. The Certificate in Program Evaluation may be incorporated into graduate degree programs in the School of Economic, Political and Policy Sciences, or may be taken independently by non-degree seeking students. Students pursuing the certificate program are normally expected to have completed undergraduate courses in statistics and in research methods. Students lacking appropriate preparation may be asked to take needed courses prior to admission to the program.

This applied program is designed around a core of psychological theories and methods, with three concentration areas: Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Evaluation Research, and Health Promotion and Disease Prevention. The core program, taken by all students, focuses on the development of critical thinking and data driven assessment and decision making. It provides students knowledge, experience, skills and abilities needed to apply the theories and methods of psychology to the identification and solution of a variety of complex individual and organizational problems. Graduates of the program have the applied research and data analysis skills to prepare them for a wide-range of careers in business, education, non-profits and healthcare.

The program is designed for students who wish to gain a wider perspective of how health behaviors impact clinical outcomes. It provides a practical opportunity to cultivate new skills for career engagement and advancement and specialized training for students interested in pursuing careers in a variety of medical and health-related fields.
